i stare at my reflection in the mirror, barely able to make it out through the tears that forced their way down my cheeks. i.. don’t even know who i am anymore. i feel like i’m losing my mind. like no matter what i do, no matter what i try, anything..

i’m stuck here.

there’s no escape, that what caine always says. there’s no escape, and even if you think there’s a small chance of getting out of here, you’re delusional. you’re losing your mind already. there’s nothing that can be done for you. be positive! keep smiling! no matter how many times you get beaten down, cut up, tortured, abused. no matter how much you miss reality, keep smiling. fake it till you make it. smile. keep smiling. be there for everyone. and don’t forget to SMILE—

suddenly, through the blur of my vision, i see a small, glitchy, black entity. on my hand. it itches, hurts. it hurts so, so sharply, worse than anything i’ve ever experienced here. like thousands of needles being pushed into your skin at once.

so, i scream. i shriek and beg for help, possibly for the first time since i got there all those years ago. i plead and cry, begging that there was a way out of this. i’m not gonna die today, right? right????? no way this would happen. i have to be there for everyone. i have to keep everyone together.

suddenly, arms wrap around me from behind, firmly and protectively, a voice in my ear, commanding that i breathe. that i focus on the sound of his voice - nothing but his voice. even when i try so, so hard, it’s difficult to focus on anything but the pain in my hand, which he ends up holding, despite the consequences. the glitching.

“ragatha. i need you to listen to me, and i need you to do what i say, okay? follow how i breathe. don’t you dare leave me like this.” it was jax. he starts to slowly breathe, each breath exaggerated as he didn’t break eye contact with me for even a moment, bringing a second hand to meet my other one, his grip firm, but palms a little sweaty. “yeah, just like that. keep doing that, okay? just like that.”

i try to talk, to tell him to run, but nothing escapes my mouth as i open it.

“hey- don’t talk. focus. focus on your breathing, focus on me. nothing else. don’t talk, don’t move. that’s it.” he says, panic seeping into his voice. as if he.. cares about me. “don’t you dare abstract. i can’t live here without you. it wouldn’t be fair.”

i wordlessly stare at him, forcing myself to do exactly what he said, pouring all of my energy into focusing on him. his purple ears, yellow and black eyes, narrowed as they stared into my oval ones. his teeth, which i always used to think looked like a radiator. a thought i always kept to myself, because i had to be kind, i had to lie—

eventually, i let out another involuntary scream, incoherently begging for him to make the pain stop, to make everything okay. but i know he can’t. it’s impossible.

“..raggy- ragatha. i know. i know it hurts, i know you’re scared and you feel like hell right now. i’m terrified right now, so in a way, we’re kinda in the same boat. you’re not alone in this. you’re ever going to be alone in this. i just need you to be okay. i need you here with me. i cant do this sh*t alone. don’t make me do this alone—“

eventually, those words, the genuine meaning behind them, is what grounded me. i look deep into his eyes, breathing in through my nose and out through my mouth, just like he had shown me. after a few minutes of this, the abstraction dies down, and i wrap my arms tightly around him.

“i was so scared—“ i sob into the crook of his neck, to which he pats my back. i half expected the affection and care to end with the abstraction, but he trembled against me. almost like he was crying..?

“i know- i know, raggy. i was too. you don’t have to go through this alone anymore. i’m here. you can talk to me. i know what it’s like.”
